Frankincense belongs to the category of blood activating and stasis resolving drugs. Frankincense extract has various pharmacological effects such as anti platelet adhesion, anti-inflammatory, anti ulcer, analgesic, and promoting wound healing.
Frankincense extract contains 60-70% resin, 27-35% gum, and 3-8% volatile oil. The main components of the resin are free a and B-boswellic acid 33%, combined boswellic acid 1.5%, and boswellic resin hydrocarbons 33%. The gum consists of 20% calcium and magnesium salts of arabinic acid and 6% tragacanth; in addition, it also contains 0.5% bitterness. The volatile oil is light yellow and aromatic, containing pinene, racemic-limonene and α, β-phellandrene. Its main aromatic components are unknown. Its derivatives and m-methylphenol, the neutral part containing α-, β-amyrin derivatives such as α-amyrinone also contains melaleuca, frankincense terpenes and oxidized frankincense terpenes.
