Platycodon is the dried root of Platycodon grandiflorum (Jacq.) A.DC., a plant of the Campanulaceae family. It is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine with abundant resources and a long history of clinical application in my country. Platycodon is bitter, pungent, and flat in nature, and returns to the lung meridian. It has the effects of relieving the lungs, soothing the throat, eliminating phlegm, and draining pus. Research shows that Platycodon contains triterpene saponins, polysaccharides, flavonoids, polyynes, steroids, phenolic acids, fatty acids and other types of compounds. The main active ingredients are pentacyclic triterpenoid disaccharide chain saponins, including Platycodon A, C and D. , D2, D3, and E. Platycodin D is a triterpenoid saponin extracted and isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine Platycodon grandiflorum, and is the most widely used main active substance. Platycodon, as a traditional herbal medicine, is widely used in Northeast Asia (including China, Japan, and Korea) to treat coughs, excess phlegm, and other diseases of the throat (Pharmacopoeia Commission of the People's Republic of China, 2005). In addition, platycodon also exhibits significant effects on the cardiovascular and metabolic systems. In recent decades, research on Platycodon grandiflorum has mainly focused on its biological activities such as anti-tumor, hepatoprotective, renal protective, immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects.
