The aqueous extract was rich in polyphenols, rosmarinic acid, and complex carbohydrates, whereas more hydrophobic metabolites such as triterpenes and flavonoids as well as some polysaccharides and polyphenols were found in the ethanol extract. The abundant polysaccharides possess many reported biological activities such as antioxidant and immunomodulation, while several triterpenes display significant anti-inflammatory activity. Rosmarinic acid has also been shown to be an anti-inflammatory compound due to its specific inhibition of T cell signaling and its effect on glucose metabolism.
